Service Delivery

Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service provides a wide range of health and related services to the Communities of Jigalong, Punngurr, Punmu and Kunnawarritji.

The range of services includes:

General Clinical Services provided by two General Practitioners based in Jigalong with GP Clinics held in the other three communities for one day every two weeks; unless there is an emergency in which case either a GP is flown in from Jigalong or the patient is Medevac’d by the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS).  Continuity of care is provided by a Registered Nurse resident in each community with one or more Aboriginal Health Workers.

Child and Maternal Health program focuses on antenatal health checks and health promotion, changing life styles during pregnancy and with newborns and young children and family support

Chronic Disease Detection and Management services are conducted with regular health checks and follow-up checks to monitor the client’s condition and ensuring that treatment plans are being undertaken by the client.  Referrals to specialists are arranged along with Patient Assisted Transport to specialists.  Occasional visits by specialists to the communities are coordinated through the Jigalong Clinic.

Eye and Ear Health screenings occur in the communities with follow-up through visiting specialists and/or referrals to specialists usually in either Port Hedland or Perth.

Health Promotion is undertaken by all staff.  PAMS has a gym attached to the Jigalong Clinic which is used for physical fitness programs with the fitness program manager and trainer being employed by the University of Western Australia funded by BHP Biliton.

Womens’ Centre adjacent to the Jigalong Clinic is run by the HACC Program at this time; a well equipped kitchen is used to prepare meals for elderly people in the community and for pre-school children.
