The Dialysis Centre at the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) Newman Clinic has officially opened today on Thursday 28 April 2022. The Dialysis Centre is the first of its kind for Newman and its neighbouring communities and marks an important step in providing accessible healthcare to both Indigenous and non-Indigenous residents in the region.
The Centre is equipped with the latest in dialysis machine technology managed by specialist nurses trained in dialysis treatment, with enough machines to treat up to 10 patients per day. Prior to the Centre’s establishment, patients from Newman and surrounding regions would need to undertake extensive travel across the state to Perth, Broome, or Port Hedland to receive dialysis treatment.
The project was announced in May 2021 with $1.9 million provided by BHP in funding towards the creation of the Dialysis Centre. The financial support has made it possible to provide a critical health service that caters to the unique health needs of the people in the region.
“Many residents of our region, including Martu and Nyiyaparli people, have had to move to urban centres or travel for long periods of time to receive treatment, isolating them from their support networks at home,” says PAMS CEO Robby Chibawe.
“This has long been a critical service needed in Newman, with the rate of kidney disease is disproportionately higher in regional and Indigenous communities. We are thrilled to see the Centre at its completion and to provide this necessary health service here in Newman.”
“We would like to thank BHP for the funding which funded the set up costs of the Dialysis Centre and to Purple House for their continuous support to set up the treatment facility,” Robby added.
The official opening was held at the PAMS Newman Clinic at 11am and was joined by the Member of the Pilbara representing the premier, BHP Representative and other regional and local stakeholders. Celebrations included a Welcome to Country led by a Community Elder, with remarks, ribbon cutting, Centre tours and lunch.
Community members in need of support for dialysis treatment will have better access to the right care provided on Country and close to home.
